President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he will nominate former federal prosecutor Christopher A Wray as the next FBI director. Wray is a partner at King & Spalding, and he will replace former FBI chief, James B Comey. At King & Spalding, Wray chairs the Special Matters and Government Investigations Practice Group. Before joining this company, Wray had served as assistant attorney general in charge of the Department of Justice’s criminal division where he looked after the Enron Task Force and investigations of fraud. Wray had served under George W Bush as an assistant attorney general from 2003 to 2005. Trump had tweeted regarding the new appointment where he called Wray “a man of impeccable credentials” and said details of the nomination will follow.

The announcement of the new FBI director comes at a time when June 8 is scheduled for a testimony about Trump’s attempts to get him to end the FBI investigations into the US President’s former national security adviser’s relations with Russia. Comey is scheduled to testify in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee tomorrow. Comey was suddenly fired by Trump in April, and the post has been empty since then. Meanwhile, FBI is currently investigating possible links between Trump’s associates and Russia, regarding the 2016 presidential election.

Wray currently specialises in white collar law and internal investigations, according to the Justice Department site. He represented New Jersey Governor Chris Christie after the Bridgegate Scandal. Meanwhile, in the testimony scheduled tomorrow, there will be questions asked about a Washington Post report where an intelligence official told associates that Trump asked him if he could persuade Comey to ease off in a case.

I will be nominating Christopher A. Wray, a man of impeccable credentials, to be the new Director of the FBI. Details to follow.

The US President is known to distract attention from controversies by creating new ones through his tweets. This pick for FBI Director was also announced by him from his Twitter handle. It remains to be seen how this nomination will affect the ongoing proceedings in the court.
